Unidentified Va. Depot Along VA-55

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

There is a former Southern Rwy depot along VA55 in northern Virginia, that has been turned perpindicular to the road, and is in use as a residence. The depot is a 1/4-1/2 mile West of the highway crossing at Thoroughfare. Any clues as to its' former location? Thanks.

Russell--I've wondered aobut that station for years too. The Thoroughfare station was in a store that also was the post office. When they needed to make deliveries the train would just stop on VA55 and block traffic (not much back then). Anyway, I suspect that the station is either from Haymarket or Gainesville and was moved to that spot. I'll check with a local expecrt I know and try to get a confirmation. By the way, I recently photographed all the existing structures on the old Harrisonburg Branch and will have a page on that added soon--Larry

Russell--an update. That depot is the original Thoroughfare depot! It was further up the road and on the left just before the tracks. Was moved to present location in the 1950s. By the way, the stucco building next to the brick one in The Plains was the orignal frame depot then became a freight depot after the brick one was built.
