Searching for the RR line Columbus, GA : LUSENET : Central of Georgia Railway Historical Soc : One Thread

I am searching for the railroad line south out of Colubus, Ga in the mid 1800's that my ggrandfather worked for. His name was James Andrew Wood and he was a foreman. His brother Jefferson Davis Wood was an engineer. They lived, after Columbus, in Georgetown, GA. Then they moved on into Alabama around Troy and Dothan. James Andrew sent his two young sons to railroad camp. There they contracted TB came home and died. Their mother died from nursing them. I have writted to Colubus University and also the RR retirement board in Chicago. Neither were any help. The 2 young men were Andrew Marshall Wood and Lawrence Gibson Wood. Thank you for reading and any lead would be greatly appreciated. I am writing a book.

If your ggrandfather worked for the same company in all those places then he might have worked for the Central of Georgia as the Central had lines these places. See our brief history of the Central at the CGRHS Web site for more details of when the road reached some of these places.

The SAL and Southern were both also in Columbus, as was the WRA before selling its line to the CG.

Other lines were in the Dothan area. However, only the CG ran through Georgetown, which is just across the 'Hooch from Eufaula, AL.

So odds are it was the CG that employed your ggrandfather.
