County cautious on Y2K compatibility concerns

By DIANA LEWIS Staff Writer JEFFERSON - Ashtabula County officials will take advantage of the world's weekend entry into the new millennium to make sure all county systems are ready for the following Monday, the first workday of 2000. County administrator Joe Pedro said he has asked representatives from each county office to work a couple hours on New Year's Day, which falls on a Saturday. Pedro said he is not anticipating any major problems outside the odd printer. But by bringing in one person from each office in the courthouse complex, it will be easy to identify glitches and rectify them right away. Special attention will be paid to the courthouse security system, to make sure it is working properly. "We don't expect the county to grind to a halt," Pedro said, smiling. "But we are just doing what any prudent business person will be doing. Taking care of things before we get surprised on a regular workday." Pedro said he will have a staff of four county computer people on hand, along with a couple of other computer system consultants. "This is ideal," Pedro said. "Because Jan. 1 falls on a Saturday, we can do this and it won't disrupt the regular work week."

Hee Hee Hee!!! "But by bringing in one person from each office in the courthouse complex, it will be easy to identify glitches and rectify them right away." ROTFLMAO!

FYI, Ashtabula County has a pop. of 100,000 with 28,000 living in the actual city which is situated right on the shore of Lake Erie. We have two large docks here, mostly coal. Used to be a major supply route to the steel plants in Pittsburgh. Power plant is coal based, they have their own dock.

BTW, been on lots of last minute prep trips lately and noticing what others have in their carts. Only once did I see what I thought were preps...A lady with a Coleman camping stove and a couple bottles of propane. That was two months ago. No hoarding in these parts! (Except for me) I'm starting to think Chuck in Cleveburg is my next nearest GI!

My best to you all,

Dave

Heh, Good one Dave!

Barney Fife's Y2K Strategy:

Send in one guy for two hours on a Saturday to fix any glitches.

So THAT'S what we've been doing wrong I spose....

I LOVE this quote: "We are just doing what any prudent business person will be doing (after rollover). Taking care of things before we get surprised on a regular work day."

Translation: "We are just doing what any prudent business person will be doing (on Jan. 1). Fix on fail."

So THAT was the prudent-business-person advice of 1999! Just wait til Jan. 1 and fix it when it fails. Figures. Saved by an informed society once again.
