Oil, and getting it out of the ground and refining it (N. Krushev..partial repost)...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I will borrow from Nikoli Krushev:

I used to think some of the pollies here had a reasonable leg to stand on, because there was insufficient hard evidence to really form an opinion on just what the results of Y2K were going to be. That all went out the window with the NIST report, and John (Koskinen's) report on embeds last month. We now know with absolute certainty that major segments of the infrastructure are going to be toast on or shortly after rollover due to failures in embedded systems. Replacement parts for the failed systems haven't even been designed yet because no one knows exactly which ones are going to fail, and the custom applications are virtually unlimited. The ramp up from failure to design to production to repair is a complicated process requiring a fully funtioning infrastructure devoid of time pressures. Obviously this environment is not going to exist due to the nature of the problem. Our resident pollies dissapeared in masse for over a week after the disclosure of the chip reports, only to return with not logical arguments, but blathering idiocy about uncapping wells and turning up production in existing fields. Denial has now turned to hysteria, because like it or not their own polly master has held their face to the mirror and forced them to peer into the abyss. The polly position is clearly completely untenable at this stage, as anyone with a reading comprehension level above second grade could see. I'm not going to hurl profanities or engage in further discourse with these people, it is pointless and a waste of time, which is our most valuable remaining rescource .

Even a modest reduction of 6 to 8% in refined product is going to result in rationing, and even a best case scenario under currrent remediation levels is going to triple that shortfall. Personally I think the threshold of the systemic domino effect is going to be crossed and oil-power-supply failures are going to cascade to an unrecoverable point in pretty short order.

Thank you Nikoli!

Lets discuss the Koskinen report, knowing what we know about Iran, Iraq and Venezuela. Who do you think provided these countries with their computers and embedded systems?

Iran has come forward with their assessments. Out of their very own mouths, they are toast. We're okay here in the US only if they are lying. Of course Koskinen says not to worry.

Are you prepared to base your future on an antagonist nation lying to us? According to various posters here, we have nothing to worry about. According to others, we have a lot to worry about.

You now have some implications to ponder. The smoking guns are not yet showing their smoke, and time is short. Whatcha gonna do?

The issue is the National Power Grid (NPG) and transformers within the NPG. Transformers use a date sensitive embedded chip. Transformers are sealed and would have to be unsealed to be tested.

: Un-be-lie-va-ble!!! Chips within a sealed transformer!!!! Pardon me too whilst I hinge my own jaw back in. Transformers are filled with mineral oil. Do any of these folks ever stop to think ***WHY*** on earth would anyone put a date-sensitive processor there in the first place? That old saw about "chips in *inaccessible* places" just will NOT die, will it?

HaHa, if that's true I just went infomagic. Got a link?

-- Nikoli Krushev (doomsday@y2000.com), December 05, 1999.

HaHaHa: The same careless mentality that constructed a forty year computer system with a fatally flawed basic code that would fail on 01/01/2000 would put chips where then can't be retrieved without doing great harm to the application, that's who would do such a thing.

-- cody (cody@y2ksurvive.com), December 05, 1999.

There are indeed plenty of chips in inaccessable places.

Ever hear of geostationary satellites?

That said, I too am incredulous at the claim that there are "chips" inside power distribution transformers.

It would be tantamount to finding a swiss watch movement inside the gearbox of a Caterpillar earth-mover.

If someone wants to cite some actual manufacturer's documentation, that's one thing. But otherwise, it's something I can't see as anything other than absurd.

DISTRIBUTION CONTROLLERS are NOT in transformers.

back to sleep, Oh constructor of straw men

Well It's been about three hours and no reply from HAHA, so I think we can safely assume he's just another troll trying to set up a strawman as footballer and Ron have surmised. I did find his post informative though. At this late stage of the game the herd is still steadfastly munching their cud, and no sign of a stampede is even on the horizon. Why then the return of the trolls to fight this delaying action? Nothing we can possibly say or do on this forum is going to make a whit of difference between now and rollover in the overall percentage of the population that is preparing. So why are the trolls back? What mission can they serve at this stage of the game?

All that is left is post rollover panic. Now this is where it gets ugly. Obviously the government is expecting a nightmare scenario to develop in the days following Jan. 1st, and is hoping to sell the message that disruptions are not all that widespread and will be of short term duration. It is going to take them several weeks to get their military forces deployed, military supply lines up and running, and establish containment of the cities. These trolls are back for one purpose only, to buy the government the time needed after rollover to institute an effective martial law program.

This seems to be a two pronged attack utilizing strawmen of their own construction which they can attempt to get us to buy into, then rip apart to destroy the credibility of the resident posters here who are not embedded chip experts. Secondly the proliferation of contrail, ufo, and other fringe topics which lead newbies to assume this forum is infested with lunatics, and that Y2K is just another hysteria event. When the gas stops flowing and those tanks start rolling into major cities people are going to realize the government has lied to them bigtime. They are going to be looking for the truth, and this site is going to get a hell of a lot of traffic. Now who are they going to believe, the people trying to defend transformer strawmen and ufo-chemtrail reports, or Peter Jennings telling them it was all terrorist attacks and not Y2K that crapped the system? Let's stop playing into the hands of the trolls and try to keep this on topic for the last three weeks, ok guys and gals?

Absolutly incredible!!! You would wait for a reply, wondering if chips are really in xformers [that's insiders lingo for transformer],WOW!!! I'm astounded!!! I'm speechless!!

Is this link supposed to represent something other than the installation of the same straw man into another forum? Jesus that guy's entire post is bullshit. They're going to selectively replace tranformers on an as needed basis? Where are they going to get these millions of tranformers? They are going to reinstall the noncompliant hardware in the plants and island? say duh? Obviously the local tranformers on the poles couldn't contain embedded chips, but the big dual phase rigs sitting in front of the generators that feed the switchyards are another matter. I simply do not know enough about them to know whether they actually utilized an embedded overload protector or not. That is why I gave you the benefit of the doubt for three hours no matter how unlikely your assertion.

-- Nikoli Krushev (doomsday@y2000.com), December 06, 1999.

Comrade K, I'm with you. Except the part about this site getting real busy if the oil deliveries are screwed up. If said scenario happens, there won't be any "chat rooms". Please don't say "Jesus" in a sentence unless it's for praise or prayer purposes because we need His wisdom in this matter. Thanks.

-- Dot (dromano03@snet.com), December 06, 1999.

HAHAHA,

There are a number of false assumptions in the claim that power transformers have embedded chips sealed inside them. The first one is that few power transformers are actually sealed units. Yes, they do have seals (also known as gaskets), but they are not normally sealed units. They do have protection systems, monitoring systems and in some cases control systems associated with them, but none of these systems are inside the tank.

The closest to having anything embedded in the oil would be the thermocouple (not a chip) to measure the internal temperature, but even this can be replaced quite easily.

Unfortunately, it is this type of false reporting which tends to stop people from looking seriously at the issue Y2K.
