I can see it now...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I can see it now. The headlines are clear. (say, roughly Jan-Mar)

Yesterday ( because Today wont be a nice place to be come Jan 1) with Katie Bluric and Matt Cower. ' Yesterday in America there were rumors of riots in LA and Chicago, but according to our trustworthy news teams in each major city, who of course provide believable front line coverage, there are very few rioters. The looting was mistaken for a nice store owner who decided to give away his TV's and VCR's to the general public. That smoke you see is really from a cheese factory just out of sight. And no, that's NOT an innocent person being dragged away by police, he'd been there all day protesting the fact that his "3 day supply" of food had been taken along with the rest of his neighbors grub to be distributed among the homeless.. you know.. the ones in the "food lines". What a NON-event this Y2K turned out to be. Be sure to read Bryant Humbel's report on " The Military had to round up civilians to protect them from themselves." '

I'm sorry for the sarcasm, but a report on the NBC news here in Jersey tonight really ticked me off. Apparently, they have decided to show video to children in schools here about Y2K, and to send home their propaganda for the parents to read. Not only was the report done in a manner as to brush off genuine concerns, there was sneering derision from anchors, school teachers who were blatantly downplaying the situation and I'd have sweared the whole thing was written by a PollyAnna. This, to date, has been the most unrespecting broadcast of concerns regarding Y2K I have seen.

I wonder if any of them have read the report on the Senate committee site that states " Study says small chemical businesses NOT Y2K ready, Bennett, Dodd urge EPA, FEMA to help prepare communities" ? Or.. That less than 40% of Oil & Gas Embedded systems has been CP Tested? Less than 70% of oil and gas systems are even ready. Or.. State regulatory agencies with authority over drinking water and facilities that serve 58 million people were found "inactive" And.. that most districts who provide treated drinking water to customers can function 5-7 days w/o electricity, but sewage lift stations can only function one-half hour before overflowing. Or.. the best for last.. The Commitee can only conclude either that many{oil and gas} companies are 99% ready and will finish the last 1% of their systems in the next few months, or that many oil and gas companies will not complete Y2K remediation efforts in time.

All this is direct from the 100 day report.

I have become so numb to all the information I read, and all the information I hear on the ' popular' media. According to the 100 day report, there is definitely something to worry about. According to our local news.. there is not. My brain is tired. Anyone else having these thoughts? Anyone have any input? Anything, good bad or indifferent.. would be appreciated. This is my first time posting here.. and probably my last.

Thanks for letting me vent! Danielle

Do you like to mudwrestle?

All I can say is that I'll be glad, VERY glad once the suspense is over and we can finally see what truly does happen. I don't think that the over all ramifications of y2k will be fully known for several months though and the 1st will only be a minor precurser of the overall impact. I must confess though that 6 months or so ago that I felt that at this time this year we would.... 1.See the stock market behaving reeeeally eratically. 2. See ALOT more public fear showing itself thru hoarding etc. etc. 3. See ALOT more y2k related glitches taking and having already taken place, especially after having being forewarned about April 1st, July 1st, and Sept. 9th. 4. I felt that this site would be a hotbed of opinions based upon events that have taken place already. Instead, It seems like the flow of comments have shifted from y2k related topics to less y2k related topics. With no fresh information this site seems to be dying. It will be facinating to see what input comes onto this site at the very end of December and early January.

King of Spam, Contrary to what you might think, your "do you like to mudwrestle" comments never were funny.

Speak for yourself! I always get a little laugh out of the unexpected query about mud wrestling. You do not speak for all of us, sparky!

-- Incognito (Layinglow@thecrib.com), December 06, 1999.

I agree with Rich. I've been actively involved with Y2K for 3 years and aware for many more (24 years in IT) and expected a lot more cracks to be appearing by now. Like Danielle, I'm tired of the waiting game.

POITS!

To me, the starkest reminder that Y2K HAS arrived is the shortages being reported in the pharma drug area.

This is one that deserves to have a separate thread every day, as it is of vital importance for tens of millions, PLUS it as usual, contains ALL of the elements that link together to create a supply of goods, including importation from 3rd world countries!

If it makes you feel any better, there was a cartoon in Boy's Life magazine (a magazine for boy scouts) that showed two boys cowering in fear of the shadow cast by the Y2k bug. Then, when they actually saw the bug, it was small. They asked it how it could be so small when everyone was so afraid of it, and it said "I used to be big, but then people learned about me and prepared for me, and now I'm small." I thought it was a good way to address any fears the kids might have.

Hi Danielle....

A lot of us are getting a bit tired too. I was in a store today, saw something I really should have more of on sale for my preps, but bought another bottle of Korbel Champagne instead. Local radio announced that Korbel's warehouse was empty and that everything they had was in distribution. A real Y2K shortage.

Things come to the point that you've done what you can and it's time to relax and bleed off the stress. We only have so much stamina (and cash). I take a few days off from the forums and dealing with preps on a regular basis because I'm in pretty good shape here and started prepping a long time ago. Lucky to only have one other person to prep for (my 10 year old boy) so it hasn't been too difficult. Hope you can take a break and feel better afterwards.

BTW, And it really is an honor to be greeted and queried about mud wrestling by that most noble and beneficient King (sometimes inserting a little comic relief into a thread is much needed and brings a chuckle). Best of luck.

Incognito and Don, I agree, I have only been here 3 days now and find KOS to be amusing.

Danielle, I was also greated by the honorable King of Spain, I think he is funny.

Indeed there are many of us who are so sick of y2k consuming our lives and eating up our finances. But consider the alternatives, which I am sure you have. I have y2k friends and we try to help each other stay motivated. It is our little support group and it really does help. Glad you did your venting, much healther than keeping it bottled up in side. Good luck to you and yours.
