Of course, it has a LOT of spin, but at least it's on the page... I wonder how long it'll take to get top billing though? Hmmm.

I've just read the article. It's just contradiction after contradition. No surprise there. Here's a few snippets.

Y2K experts do not advise buying months of food, drugs and other supplies. In fact, overreaction could lead to shortages unrelated to Y2K glitches. And do all this as early as possible to beat any last-minute rush. If you think the Christmas gift-buying rush is bad, it will be nothing compared to a Y2K supplies rush at the end of the month. Also, get extra supplies where local governments do not appear ready. This is most crucial in rural areas Even Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve, recommends taking only enough for a normal holiday weekend and warns that too much cash could tempt muggers. Read Y2K notices provided by utilities, telephone companies, local government and other services, and ask questions about their readiness. How well have they responded during past emergencies? Tests show that banks, utilities, phone companies, air traffic controls and other key systems are largely ready. However, smaller businesses and local governments might not be fully prepared, and problems abroad might affect U.S. commerce. Any preparation by individuals would come in handy in the event of problems. Some individuals and groups even advise going beyond the government recommendations. Koskinen acknowledges the risk of creating unnecessary worry by stressing the need to prepare. But he insists information and sound advice is ultimately better than rumor and speculation.

Pardon me Mr. Greenspan, but this is not your area of specialty.

Hey... if the ABA can write sermons, Greenspin can fight crime.

Maybe they are learning new job skills for after the rollover.

"College preparing for worst from Y2K"

School planning shelter for 500, which senator calls 'nutty behavior'

By Meg Jones of the Journal Sentinel staff

Last Updated: Dec. 3, 1999

Although most officials throughout Wisconsin are playing down the possibility of Y2K-related problems as clocks tick toward midnight on Dec. 31, a Manitowoc County technical college isn't taking any chances.

Should the sky fall, power grids blink out and water taps stop running, the Cleveland campus of Lakeshore Technical College is preparing to provide food, water and shelter for as many as 500 people for up to two weeks.

The college has purchased 2,400 gallons of bottled water and 9 tons of food for what it's calling a "Y2K disaster shelter."

Portable toilets - 24 of them - will be delivered late this month and placed strategically around the campus. Lanterns and extra batteries have been procured in case the lights go out. An emergency diesel engine was bought and an extra fuel tank was rented.

Now all that's needed is a catastrophe.

"We aren't doing this because we believe something will happen," said Dennis Thiel, physical plant director at the college.

. . .

"What we're telling people is that they really need to prepare to take care of themselves. If this becomes full-blown, there isn't any shelter in any county that can take care of that."

End of article.

Too bad the words at the end of the article didn't get the headlines. Noticed it's typical for Y2K issues that the true story, which tends to be at odds with the beginning, is usually tucked away at the end; buried but there as insurance.

Enjoy this forum very much. Especially the camaraderie. This is the time when we need our friends.

I'm a newbie.

My husband and I are computer professionals working just outside the beltway for federal contractors. We are on the front lines. It's going to be ugly.

We're prepared and praying. God is in control: keep repeating that over and over and over until you believe it. It is true. In good times and in bad times, He's our best hope.

Bless you, Jane

Hey, is Mr. Greenspan still living in Sea Ranch California about 2 1/2 hours above San Francisco, where no freeways go? And it's a rual coastal community with a community garden. If you aren't in charge of printing greenbacks or haven't saved up your silver dollars for retirement interest...then the only jobs in this area for renters are window washing type. I love this area! Big Rocks, Big ocean Vistas, plenty of sea creatures for the fish eaters or kelp beds for veggies. And don't forget that wonderful community garden....they don't allow you to have your own...can't even plant the flowers you choose...part of the rules....but BOY HOWDY....get yourself a sprout house.......

P.S. most of the sea ranch area is surrounded by GROWERS....who are armed and ready to protect their CROPS....hmmmmm...spliff spliff..garble garble.........and they have been living without electricity.....they are ready for the Y2K or camping...................so Mr. Greenspan will have Grower protection in a secondary way, or they will party down.............living in a fantasy......Marilyn.............
