Is the Internet becoming a self-directed 'entity'? Or is it something that will reach a certain point and stay there?

I can't see how it could become self-directed unless there was some good artificial intelligence introduced into it. Don't see how the Inet could stop growing -- as long as all the infrastructure remains sound. Wonder if there is a way to PLOT the growth of the internet?
