Looking for other Okies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We're looking for other Okie homesteaders, particularly in the south-central portion of the state. We'd especially love to find others who are homeschooling teens. Also, we're looking for LaMancha goat breeders in Oklahoma, western Arkansas, or northern Texas.

hello........fellow okie :)

i live in oklahoma city, and i am hoping to soon purchase land and move. i have found 5 acres that i like quite well, but am not quite comfortable with the water. the well produces excellent tasting quality water, but only about 2 gallons per minute, so i am seriously considering passing on it. just not sure yet. what part of oklahoma are you homesteading?

I'm not sure you would call us homesteaders, my husband has a job. We have a few hundred acres in Eastern OK (near McAlester), our teenage girls have homeschooled their entire life. One will be going to college next fall. We raise sheep, bees, chickens, cows, own a few horses and planted a blueberry u-pick to try and make this place pay a little for itself. Our well water seems great for both the house and irrigation. Too many coyotes and about 30 minutes from a grocery store.

This isn't an answer, but a question. Oklahoma is one of the states I've thought we might consider for homesteading, but my husband seems to think we wouldn't like it (he grew up in Nebraska). What is it really like?

Hi Okie's and others.

We live in NE Oklahoma. I just found this forum, so didn't see this when first posted.

We have been homeschooling for about three years. We have two children, ages 10 and 5. We also have various critters, but no goats.

What is OK really like? We have everything from rolling plains to stunning mountains. Our place is in the Cookson Hills, foothills of the Ozarks. BEAUTIFUL!!

I don't know if we really qualify as home steaders as I have a full time job off our place & MRS. does all sorts of jobs like cleaning houses & mowing lawns. We Lived & worked in Okla. City for years getting this place payed for. We started with un-improoved land & now have all the same things town people have such as indoor plumbing & elect. & Tele. We raise a few cattle, some chickens, & all the usual stuff you find on a country place. We just go real slow making improovments & always pay cash or do without till we can. Good luck

Hey Ya'll!!! Another Okie here. We have 20 acres west of Tecumseh and are trying to raise goats, fruit, and veggies. All of which has taught us a lot about being human. Hubby also has a full-time job in OKC, but I stay on the farm doing my own thing. A big time for me is going into town to pick up the mail at the Post Office and buzzing over to the lumber yard to get yet another load of lumber for whatever project that's on the agenda. Our goats are mixed, but we are looking into going full bred by next year or the year after. Not sure of the breed yet, but leaning toward Alpine. I simply love this forum and feel like I've known you guys forever. :) Iris Allen
