Two unverified rumors...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

...and I cant find documents or articles to support these rumors.

Just had finals in my EMT class part of my contingency plan just in case. One student is a GI, moving to Washington with parents on a small farm. Weve been sharing information.

#1: He told me (Saturday) that Clinton has moved his New Years Eve world address to Dec. 28. He indicated that the signs lead to some form of curfew.

A DGI overheard us discussing Y2K.

#2: He (the DGI) said he heard that all roads to State and National Forest lands will be closed on that day until further notice. This was confirmed by my GI classmate.

Again, the post was unverified rumors. Has anyone seen or have documentation to validate the rumors, or should I just dismiss them as such?

Thanks for the input...I have enjoyed reading everyone's opinions for the last few months. May God bless and protect all of you and your families this holiday season!

ALL THOSE TIRED OF READING HEARSAY ON EMERGENCY POLICING PLANS: DO NOT READ THIS POST1

My tenant (little Y2K compliant cottage in the boonies) -- a she -- is a recent graudate in criminal justice/psychology, and has a number of close friends, dates, acquaintances former classmates, come grads, some still in scool in criminal justice program, who have been actively recruited by local county sherrif's departments. Two of her close friends are now working for teh County in this program. She spoke with one about Y2K. I spoke with her last night and questioned her for details on a subject she brought up: New Year's vacations, her trip down south to stay with folks, etc., which lead to this broaded discussion:

She sez that he sez that (I know I know, flame it away!!): Recruitment began actively about 2 months ago: 100-120 new recruits were, she sez he sez, hired by the County at a rate of $20/hr, to begin a 2-4 week training program as of Mid-Novmeber, to be "on the street" so to speak by December 15, which is ... today. The term of service and employemtn is one month: till January 15; but the contracts may be extended. $20/hr. is great rate for a student with loans, and if you're in a crim justice program like these fellows, this wil look great on your resume, help with classes, etc. So they've filled most positions, she sez he sez.

However, training has been "shotgun", and much more in the vein of conditioning: 2-3 weeks of continued exposure to multimedia programs with extensive film and video footage of rioting crowds, and mob scenes of looting, arson, assault, and usual range of extreme forms of disorderly conduct. Instructors repeat the message to the recruits: "This is what you must expect". The exposure is extrmely inense, she sez he sez, and he has left in the evenings highly sensitized to violence; hyped up; ready for TSHTHTF. They are receiving no instruction in mass or panic psychology or whatever might be useful in defusing a tense or potetntially violent situtation. The conculsiton of the recruit, my tenant, and myself is that they are being encouraged to "lose it" in their role as enforcment officers or "peace-keepers".

The recruits will be ... believe it or not .... armed, but are receiving minimal to no firearms training. They will be encouraged to patrol in uniform (what they'll drive I can't guess: I don't think there are enough patrol cars for this many officers) looking for potentially volatile situations, which -- I am presuming -- in their psyched up "new cop on the beat" fame of mind, they will aggravate into critical confrontations. They will have to be ready to be "on duty" 36 hours at a stretch, and yet be ready to respond to any emergency calls that come in after their shift. Tenant shoots knowing glances and sez"iomagine someone in a sleep-deprived state, with a weapon and no firearms training ...." facing anxikous citizens or a pnicked citizenry.

There was much more detail, including discolures --third or fouth hand for all you wo don'e need ot read this -- about instructions coming into the county and local police department on portocols for dealing with local rioting. To wit: local police will have to step aside and yeild enforcement to state/federal authorities. She says there seems to tensions developing already -- sort of "turf wars" between members of the competeing policing agencies.

This is a summary. This is not meant to persuade anyone with hard facts or tnagible evidence. It's an internet post -- tkae it for waht it's worth. If I get a signed notarized statement from my tenant, naming her friend's name, age and phone number, I will post that asap, you bet.

Squirrel-

"She sez that he sez" great humor!

I don't know why some folks flame others for this type of information. It's easy enough to disregard, should the reader so choose. For me it's just 'one more thing'. I certainly don't make decisions based on things like this, but would rather hear it than not hear it. It goes in the 'hmmm' pile (which is now quite large, btw).

Thanks for contributing the info.

Squid-

Your 'sig' is the funniest going. Makes me smile and sometimes even chuckle every single time I read it!

BTW, are you a giant squid by any chance? I have been fascinated by giant squid ever since reading about them in childhood. Sperm whales have been found with giant sucker marks on them which indicate that there may exist giant squid as large as several hundred meters in length.

Jeanne -

If I may ask, please, what state/county/city is this supposedly taking place?

The Administration has a "roadless" proposal currently in process with a comment deadline of December 20. This is to set aside additional forest areas as "roadless" and closed from motorized recreation and other multiple uses. The Administration has a Land Legacy initiative and has just named 18 additional sites for "preservation" as national landmarks. The Administration also has a new Forest Planning initiative in progress with comment period extended until February 3. Perhaps one or more of these were mistaken for closures of the National Forest.

You can read more about these inititives through links on our web pages http://www.snowcrest.net/siskfarm/alertpg.html

Choirboy:

No, I missed it. But no great loss, I'll just watch it live in a couple of weeks. Hey I'll even be in it (alive I hope).

If they close all the road to STate and National Parks, I will be unable to get in or out of my house to town. Good thing, maybe: will keep the varmints out. Of course, means you-know-who is going to be in the area. But they'll be in everyone's area, I imagine. I KNEW I should have bought that helicopter for my preps.....

Considering that NY's Adirondak Park is State Park with literally villages ands towns embedded I hardly think they will try to close State Parks.

Chuck,

look closely at the maps and see how easy it is to not close but restrict access for tentance living there only.

There are only a couple of roads to go into the park.

Lucky me I do own a nice place up there and so it should be no proplem going there if I have to.

I do believe this could be in the works to discurage people from streaming into those parks.

It would be impossible to help anyone NOT prepared to live outside for a longer periode of time in an emergency.

States parks here in California, if located in the mountains are closed down around the beginning of October. Too much snow, pipes are wrapped to prevent freezing, gates are closed, and the roads and camp grounds are not plowed. I know there are millions of Americans who love to camp in the snow, I don't know why the government shuts them down, do you?

IMHO...it doesn't seem feasible to invest that kind of money training individuals for a temporary assignment. It would be very expensive with no long term benefit for the department. I can only remark that in my area, county departments work on a shoestring budget. It is the city departments that have larger budgets.

Me,

(Weren't the squid's sucker marks the size of a dinner plate? I thought that this had been found on a body of a sperm whale...)
