Japan Strengthens Police Force for New Year's Eve

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan plans to more than double the usual number of police on duty this year during New Year's Eve to guard against millennium bug-related accidents.

The National Police Agency said on Wednesday that about 106,000 police would be on patrol across the country to deal with any fallout from computer glitches or other problems during New Year's Eve festivities.

Japan, which has come under fire for not being prepared for major disasters, said earlier this month it would put about 96,000 military staff on alert and 100 aircraft, warships and special vehicles on standby to deal with Y2K-related accidents.

Tokyo's metropolitan police force has said it will mobilize 24,200 officers -- one-fourth its total police force -- on the night.
