Italy's Prime Minister Resigns--Looks "OnTopic" to me

On or Off topic? You make the call. Fair use yada yada Snip... ROME (Reuters) - Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema formally resigned on Saturday, bringing to an end Italy's 56th government since World War Two.

As had been widely expected, D'Alema tendered his resignation to President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi at the end of a debate on the turmoil in his 14-month-old government, throwing Italy into a full-scale political crisis.

A statement from Ciampi's office said the president would begin consultations with institutional figures, former presidents and political parties at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday to see if consensus could be found for a new government.

Ciampi, the supreme arbiter in Italian politics, reserved his decision on whether to accept the resignation, a standard formula used in such cases. He asked D'Alema to stay on in a caretaker capacity to handle routine matters until a new government is formed.

It was widely expected that Ciampi would ask D'Alema to form Italy's 57th post-war government. Ciampi, who as D'Alema's treasury minister shepherded Italy into the euro, is said to want a swift end to the crisis to avoid harming Italy's fledgling economic recovery.

Commentators say a new government could be in place by Christmas. D'Alema, the first ex-communist to become Italian prime minister, was forced to quit after his coalition of ex-communists, Marxists, Greens and centrists unravelled.

Unsnip...

Italy has this refreshing political pane turnover which America lacks due to stale white bread recidivism.

I don't read or speak Italian, but there's an obvious translation to this one:

"I CAN'T CONTROL IT! WE'RE GOING DOWN! EJECT! EJECT! EJECT!"
