Hulling oats

Does anyone know how to hull oats at home so that it can be used like oatmeal or oat groats? Does it take special equipment?

You can buy or grow hulless oats that saves you the trouble of getting the hulls off as they can be a tough proposition without the proper equipment. I'd love to find a manual homeowner/small farm oat and barley huller. A manual rice huller too.

Once you have the hull off you have a whole oat groat. There are several roller/flaker mills on the market that can be used to turn the groat into rolled oats. The Family Grain mill and the Country Living Mill both have roller/flaker attachments and the Marga mill is a dedicated roller mill. A quick net search will turn up a number of sources or you could check some of the retailers I have listed in the FAQ. I review nearly every mill on the current market in my book The Prudent Pantry: Your Guide to Building a Food Insurance Program.
