Y2K Stockpiling Mentioned on The Weather Channel

greenspun.com : LUSENET : HumptyDumptyY2K : One Thread

One of The Weather Channel's forecasters (Jim ???) just mentioned how he'd gone grocery shopping and there wasn't any bread left, little water and few flashlights...

Sounds like the herd is beginning to stir.

I know it is beginning to stir at least in this area (south of Seattle)... business partner was unable to get his boat home. He was going to use the 160 tank for gas storage so they decided to buy some gas cans (5gal) to store some fuel in to run the gen for the well. They had been to Fred Meyer on Monday and there were two big bins of gas cans - overflowing - they said. When they got there yesterday about 10:30 AM there were none. Generators were gone too as well as "D" batteries.

I was in Costco - Federal Way and you couldn't see the batteries for all the people around them. A lot of the gens were gone too, and they were trying to keep up with the bottled water literally with a forklift. People were piling in 3 and 4 cases into their carts. My Mom and I stood there and watched them go thru an entire pallet in less than 5 minutes.

My best guess is that they have heard the Space Needle party cancelled by the Mayor and then the Ritzy party up in the Needle cancelled yesterday and so they are kinda worried that the "nothing definite" might be something indeed.

Muskegon, MI - No 5-gal gas containers. No 16.4 oz propane. No wicks (for oil lamps). No water containers (1 gal.) Also: Sam's Club here is out of "CUP A SOUP" and charcoal. No Coleman fuel in any of 6 stores in this city.

I survey them daily...

Val~

howdy neighbor! Interesting news. I've done most of my shopping for the water and batteries awhile ago. Last month I was at the same costco and there was pallets of water. Interesting how people wait til the last minute. I sincerely hope nothing too serious happens. Two weeks ago I bought 12 gallons of water at Wallmart in Auburn, the cashier asked me what I was going to do will all that water. i smiled and looked at her and said, "Drink it." No more questions were asked. Interesting though, the water section at Wallmart was still pretty full, with the execption of the distilled water.(That was wiped clean) I wish you well. C.C.
