Possible meeting place if THIS SITE goes down

greenspun.com : LUSENET : HumptyDumptyY2K : One Thread

Hey folks,

After the rude surprise I got when I tried to log on to TB 2000 Top Level and Prep forums (sorry, I know some of you like the word "fora", but I just can't do it), I found this site.

Probelm is, if someone can jam up those sites, they can probably jam up this one.

I hope someone can figure out a way to avoid this, but meantime, I have a suggestion. Go to irc. I haven't been there for quite a while, but when I first got online, a few years ago, I used to log on via HOMER, as I'm a Mac user. I was able to communicate with folks from all over the country, as well as "talk" with my son and daughter-out-law in Japan (for free), and practice my Spanish by talking with folks all over Latin America and Spain.

One of my sons uses MIRC, which is for IBM compatibles. Both can be downloaded from the net. There are other programs as well.

The thing about irc is ANYBODY can create a "chat room" anytime they want. If we can't log on here, a person could create a chat room called "TB 2000" or "y2k" or whatever. We could either communicate there, and/or at least tell everyone the url for any new TB 2000 site.

If someone decides to jam up the chat room it's simple to open a new chat room. Takes about five or six seconds.

Whadyu think?

This evening, we'll post a back-up sequential list of alternate palaces to go... in case.

Contingency test... on now.

Diane, wondering "how" resilient are we?

The IRC option is certainly worth keeping in mind. If you're a Mac user (like me), go to ircle.com to download the shareware software. Ashton&Leska persuaded me to try it last night for the first time for a live chat involving a bunch of Y2K folks. It doesn't provide the same degree of reflective consideration of asynchronous postings, but it's a lot of fun carrying on live conversations.

Diane, thanks again for all your help; yeah, we need to have a bunch of backup possibililties in case machines, servers, networks, or phone companies suffer disruptions. I think the fact that we're all so concerned about Y2K will provide whatever motivation we need to retain sufficient "resilience" to keep things going...

For those who do choose IRC, if necessary, I took the step, several months ago, of setting up a channel on Efnet, the most highly traffic'd IRC network. I've got several good friends minding the store meanwhile, who are well prepared and skilled at controlling channel abuse. You can find us at #TimeBomb2000.

WebTVers please note: I have set up a TimeBomb2000 at Talk City for your use as a backup as well.

FYI.
