greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Rollover/Back-Up Forum : One Thread

Just caught this on Bo Gritz GCN net/sw radio/ am fm radio. I think Bo said the local newspaper reported extra refrigeration places being set up in Knoxville. Y2K suicides or something like that. Anyone know any more?

It'd make sense. I do think if the crises is bad enough a number of "mercy" murder suicides will happen. Mercy in the minds of the deranged not mine. Don't misunderstand that please.

One thing to note though if it is true, it means Knoxville isn't expecting anything catastrophic, because if the numbers are high enough it's a pit not refrigeration for the bodies.

Public utilities, government agencies say they've beat the deadline

These services report they are ready for Jan. 1, 2000:

* Knoxville Utilities Board. The local water, electric and natural gas distributor started working on Y2K in 1996. The only expense KUB designated specifically for Y2K was $500,000 spent on consultants hired to review its Y2K fixes.

Wears Valley, Townsend to lose power today for substation work

The Wears Valley and Townsend areas will experience a power outage this afternoon so that preparations for a new electric substation may be made.

The planned outage is expected to occur between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.

"But we are hoping it won't take that long," said Rick Harrell, director of engineering and operations for the Sevier County Electric System.

The substation will provide more voltage and likely result in fewer customers losing power during outages, Harrell said.

Today's planned outage has nothing to do with the Y2K computer bug, Harrell said.

"We have had this happening for some time," Harrell said.

Knoxville is close to Oakridge, where there was a 'problem' recently at either the Y12 or the Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Oakridge is one of the manufacturers for weapons grade materials for those mushroom makin' firecrackers.
