+ Wednesday December 29, 2:50 pm Eastern Time Six airlines cancel New Year flights in Peru LIMA, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Six international airlines have canceled flights to and from Peru over New Year because of poor demand for tickets, the airport authority said Wednesday.

Aeromexico , American Airlines (NYSE:AMR - news), Iberia , Lufthansa , United Airlines (NYSE:UAL - news) and Varig will not fly into or out of Lima's Jorge Chavez international airport December 31 or January 1, Peru's airport authority Corpac, said.

An airport spokesman would not comment on whether the cancellations were due to fears of flying in the millennium changeover. The canceled flights account for about half of planned flights through Lima's airport over the New Year.

Lan Chile (NYSE:LFL - news) also suspended two flights which were due to arrive at around midnight on New Year's Eve, Corpac said. They will now arrive on January 1.

Corpac said it did not have information on plans of Peruvian domestic airlines over New Year.

Peru's airport authority has said it is ready for the 2000 changeover and Lima will act as the regional headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Association to coordinate any possible computer problems over the New Year.

The Y2K problem refers to potential shutdowns or disruptions in computers programmed to read only the last two digits in a year.

That could make them unable to tell whether the date advances to 2000 or recedes to 1900 at midnight on Dec. 31, 1999.
