I've revived the greenspun.com server

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Rollover/Back-Up Forum : One Thread

After a night and a day of programming and reconfiguration, the Y2K forums are back. I've disabled email alerts in order to reduce the load on the computer (most people were using bogus addresses anyway). There are two special servers for the Y2K forums and I'm going to build a downloadable archive (in .tar format probably, maybe .zip) of all the postings. So you will be able to grab the whole thing to your desktop without destroying my poor Oracle server. The archive should be available later tonight.

Answers

Philip,

Did you get enough contributions that you will install a new server ?

Thank you very much !

-- hamster (hamster@mycage.com), December 30, 1999.

Thanks Phil--

As you can see, we've become quite addicted to this forum. Thank you for putting up with us!

Thanks A Bunch Phil.

Mr. Greenspun:

Thank you very much.

Please make a zip file. All of us windows zombies won't have a clue what to do with a tar file. Sorry we are so ignorant about such things, but I fear you will get more grief trying to respond to the people requesting the zip file.

TO EVERYBODY ELSE:

GET ON THE MAIN TB 2000 FORUM AND LEAVE THIS ONE ALONE. LETS BE IN ONE PLACE.

Did I get enough contributions to get a new server? No. But remember the money all goes to the animal shelter; I was using the donation level to gauge interest and commitment, the money will come out of my pocket. I guess people donated over $3000, which convinced me that the service is valued and that my friends and I should donate our time to bring it back up (and $20,000 of our money next month to buy a new server to support the community ongoing).

EXCELLENT. Thanks Philip. Your services are greatly appreciated.

-- Rob (maxovrdrv51@hotmail.com), December 30, 1999.

Thanks Philip!

Thanks, Phil! I'll buy you a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster the next time you're in the Twin Cities area... ;-)

-- Ford Prefect (bring@your.towel), December 30, 1999.

Sincere thanks to Mr. Greenspun...

Phil- Many Thanks to you, especially in a thankless job. Please do not let stupid comments from some give you a (more) jaded outlook of posters at the TB2000 forum. It is ironic that someone who doesn't share the views of most of us would work so hard to make certain we could have a place to do so. And to put up with the grief that supporting us has caused you, well, you're a better man than many of my compadres. I'm on a 21sq mile rock called Bermuda, and I really appreciate all you've done, and are continuing to do.And by the way, best layout of any forum I've seen! Thanks Again!

Phil -

Thanks so much for your time and effort. Now go have a beer.

Thanks again Phil for your time and effort.

It really is appreciated!

Thanks, Phil. Smart to get rid of the notification feature. You know this weekend is a roll of the dice on a black box system of systems -- hey, I saw Wang and Ovation go down locally (working for them in Lowell and Dedham). Trust programming organizations in an unprecedented remediation crisis?

People here got carried away in both directions. Neutral is a good place to be compared to most of what went down here; just hope you didn't miss the quality, too. Also read your programming book online -- most inspiring thing I've read to get back into the profession

Thank you Sir for giving us the tools and "virtual acreage" to build a community in the Kingdom of Greenspun.

You are a good man Phil. But so ois Lisa for jumping in with her help in bringing us another forum site. Don't forget her.

-- Nena (adahi@muhlon.com), December 30, 1999.

Yes, a heart felt thanks to you sir and your cohorts. This communication service has made such a difference to us persons who don't have contact with techies in the real world!

On a personal note, I have to chuckle at my heart stopping when this board went down...a mental health pro who was not prepared for a loss in communications the day before rollover, go figure...heh. Heaven help me clients:)

Thank you Phil!

We should have coordinated a donation drive a little bit earlier. The Date is very Late to be playing games. I could have shipped you a new server months ago!

-- (Karlacalif@aol.com), December 30, 1999.

Thank you so very much, Phil!

-- mommacarestx (nospam@thank.com), December 30, 1999.

Phil;

Thank you very much, I have made a donation and I hope that all of the readers of this forum realize that a $100 or $200 contribution is still less than a years subscription to the Wall Street Journal and one gets focused information on a subject (like Y2K) from your forums and server farm.

You have provided a light in the sea of darkness for those who have the courage to look for the light.
