Millenium dog

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Well, it looks like we've got our own little no-kill shelter here. We were perfectly happy with our eleven rescued kitties and our fourteen year old dog, and then today our sister inlaw came over with a black lab puppy, about (guessing) 4 or 5 months old, maybe 25-30 lbs.

Someone dumped him at the grocery store parking lot, then apparently lurked until my inlaws picked him up. They then drove away.

My sister inlaw called the police, they said she could leave him, or take him to the pound -- which is closed until Monday -- and then he would be killed in three days.

Of course, she brought him here. [g] He was scared, and starved, but real friendly. Our old dog likes him, and he doesn't seem to mind her. It looks like he's found a home. (We're certainly not going to take him to the pound to die.)

So, if anyone would like to suggest some names for the little guy, I'll pass them on to my wife. Right now, he's "the puppy".

Thanks!

Y2K9...nah, to corny

Millie if it were a girl but since he's not....

Others name their dogs after the current president for the usually suspect reasons, but I see no reason to insult this fine specimen with either Bill or William.

Phil after the maintainer of this forum?

I've got it Prepper! ;^D

How about DiETeR? or Deedah? Or Andy? You get the idea...

I just got a new puppy for Xmas...a Komondor about 8 wks old; 16 lbs of fluffy white fur! We thought of Duke, Dutch, Jake, Buster, Killer(just kidding), etc...thought we were going to have to go to the library to get a baby "name" book!!! Finally decided on buster. Good luck with your new puppy; you know that once you have them for about 2 days (if they have ANY personality at all), you will be in love and can't let them go.

Wow,

You're a saint.

Advice on the Lab. (We've raised Labs for almost 30 years.)

They eat voraciously. Do NOT, regardless, or how hungry he acts, overfeed this new puppy. Too much weight gain in a short period of time can predispose him to hip dysplasia. If he's really really hungry, try the "LITE" dog food ... he can eat more of it. Give a calcium supplement. Don't run him on a leash until he's over one year.

They eat voraciously. (did I say that already??) And they are not picky eaters. Will eat your couch, trees, shrubs, etc.

Start training now. Very intelligent dogs. When bored, can be a chewer, digger, pain in the tush!!!

If you already knew all this, sorry! Hope you enjoy your dog!

Thanks everyone, keep 'em coming! I'll print the thread after a while and present it to my wife.

formerly@nowhere: We've already got a *cat* named Lucky! (poor guy found our doorstep all on his own, one eyelid twisted out of shape with fur poking into his eye, needed surgery on it to get any relief)

Jeanne: "you know that once you have them for about 2 days" -- How do you think we ended up with eleven cats? [g]

007: He's a little bony, but not emaciated. He *did* wolf down a large bowl food like he hadn't eaten in a week! Right now, he crawled into our other dog's bed, curled up, and fell asleep. Poor guy had a rough day.

PS: it was just about a year ago that my dog Steinie died. He was about 14. He crawled out of the woods as a tiny, starved puppy when I was trout fishing, climbed into my lap, and fell asleep. We drove around looking for an owner, and everyone said they'd seen him there for about two weeks, and that he was a "drop off". He was the best, sweetest, smartest dog I've ever seen. His kidneys went, and the vet tried everything, but he got worse and worse. Finally, he could barely life his head, and he had horrible skin ulcers that were literally down to the bone. I finally had the vet come out to end his suffering. Still hurts to think about him.

You can see him here.

Oh heavens! Enjoy the puppy. Let's make this a better world for dogs and cats--oh, and people, I guess.

Chance: Because of him "being there"? [g]

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), December 30, 1999.

Because of you, he has a CHANCE.

Hey Ron,

Our big german shepherd walked into our lives, rescue-fashion, on 9/9/ 99, so he's our critical-dates dog. His name is Rex, but he came w/ that one. Most often, however, I call him Roxy le Smoo, for no good reason at all.
