From tomorrow's Electronic Telegraph:

The first of 355,500 babies for the day By Celia Hall

NEW ZEALAND claimed the first Millennium baby, a boy born at Waitakere Hospital in West Auckland at just one minute past midnight.

But Australia said its first baby, Bodie Jay, was born 30 seconds into the new Millennium to Erin and Wayne Ella from Wollongong, south of Sydney. Bodie was a week early.

In Fiji, in the same time zone, a 23-year-old mother gave birth to the island's first baby of the new century at 12.18am. About 2,200 British babies are expected to be born today, slightly more than on New Year's Day last year. These babies will be among 355,500 born today around the world.

City centre maternity units, however, have reported heavy bookings. St Thomas Hospital, in London, for example, says it is about 10 per cent up on last year. One explanation might be that women have decided on a hospital delivery, rather than at home, in case anything goes wrong.
