Y2K bug hits French defence system, but softly

The French Defence Ministry says the Y2K computer bug has hit France's Syracuse Two military satellite system, but has had no operational effect.

The bug struck automatic fault detection programs at ground liaison stations linked by the satellite system.

Syracuse Two was launched as part of a drive that France began after the 1991 Gulf War to develop a military satellite system independent of the United States.
