how long would it take for sewers or water problems to surface

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

say in a city like NY. I dont imagine that the toilets would immediatly back up if there were a problem. Also was wondering about the water, like how to check if it is overchlorinated or underchlorinated.

Like NY, but not necessarily NY?

Over chlorinated, there's the "Sip -- arrrgh!!!" test, though a quick sniff might tell you. Under chlorinated, I suppose how soon it took for you to get sick. I live in a NY reservoir watershed, and I know where the beaver ponds are, and how much deer poop washes down into your water supply. You could call the public health department tomorrow and ask.

Wal-Mart sells various water test kits. Look in the hardware section. Most are around $10. Can we eat, now?

You should also be worrying about over-florided water. Floride is a deadly neurological poison.

One warning of floride over-dosing is that the water tastes salty. If you get that taste, spit it out, and PRAY you didn't get a fatal dose.

Over-chlorinated water should be obvious, but under-chlorinated water might take a few days to become obvious, after people start to get sick.
