Shipping News: Update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This is an update to my previous Shipping News post regarding commercial shipping in the New York Harbor region following the rollover.

This morning and afternoon it appeared that cargo traffic was again going to be unusually light, as only two container ships were inbound to the ports in Newark Bay (one completely empty), and one lightly loaded ship was outbound to sea. However, beginning late afternoon to early evening I saw three ships inbound (one a car carrier, two container ships) and three container ships outbound.

It thus appears that, according to this snapshot in time, cargo traffic has increased toward a more typical level of activity. (The level witnessed today, however, is still light for Ports Elizabeth and Newark.) A gale is due in the region tomorrow, which may affect the frequency of inbound / outbound traffic.

I have noted nothing unusual on the marine frequencies, other than that the U.S. Coast Guard continues to maintain a publicly announced "prohibited entry zone" in the waters south of Nantucket Island, as previously discussed. (I have not further tuned the marine airwaves to investigate this matter.)

If anyone else has observed local port activities, please post your own observations. If cargo traffic continues to increase to normal levels in the next days and weeks, we may assume that Y2K has not had a deleterious effect on shipping.

No problems receiving our intermodal containers from UPRR.....They have them ramped & wheeled faster than we can unload them!

Good news. Thanks. Hopefully this will continue!

That's interesting about UPRR -- does your line interact with CSX re containers?

I passed by the Port Newark piers today to have a look, and I noticed that the cranes were idle, and the docks were stacked high with what appeared to be at least two ships' worth of containers.

UP interchanges most of its Port Authority intermodal traffic with CSX and Norfolk Southern in Chicago.

It either moves via Buffalo and Albany on CSX or two routes on NS: via Pittsburg, Harrisburg and Allentown or via Buffalo and Binghamton, depending on which intermodal freight facility in New Jersey it's going through.

I passed one westbound on my way to work this morning, lots of Korean intermodal traffic for Hanjin Lines.

And, he asks, about the oil shipments?

(Obviously, not w/r to this specific port in NJ, but to those ships in general?)

Wildweasel: A Hanjin ship was outbound yesterday.

Robert: Sorry, no details on supertankers outside the harbor at this time.
