He's the comic relief. But if you feel like paying the 6600 coppers at the Curiousity shop, you can give him a fairly decent enchanted weapon. Also, I haven't used them that much but if you get Ingress' teeth, they are also enchanted.

I use Morte's special ability to cast litany of curses on an attacker, that way they attack only Morte, while the rest of my guys beat up on the thing that is attacking Morte. Litany of curses also decreases the attackers chance to hit and saving throws.

morte is one of my favorites because of his litany of curses. early in the game, use his special against those black abidasi? (those dragon-like creatures in the Hive). he has such a high armor class that the creatures have a hard time hitting him, then you can use the nameless one to kill them. early on those 7000 exp. give a big boost.

make sure you strength is high enough and get potions for morte, also you need an enchanted item to hurt the thing.

Yeah...I've found Morte to be one of the most useful. Especially in the beginning. He really kicks butt in fights. When I was swinging & missing, he was tearing into 'em. I'm hoping those Teeth of Fire Drake make him even more dangerous. :)
