While the QE2 steamed out from New York Harbor under clear, early evening skies that were noticeably darkened by an FAA computer glitch, two tugboat captains struggled in the cold night air to free a fuel barge that had become grounded near a shallow pier during the early morning hours of today's lesser tide.

Sand barges, cement barges, fuel/oil barges, garbage scows; runs to Providence, Nantucket, Newburgh, and Baltimore -- local traffic continued to hustle along the channels leading to and from New York Harbor. I was not available today to note all inbound and outbound cargo traffic to and from Ports Elizabeth and Newark in Newark Bay, but I did view at least three container ships inbound to the ports, and two container ships and a car carrier outbound from the ports.

Today's Quote from The Harbor: "I don't need fuel, I need grub. I have 30,000 gallons of fuel. I need grub -- grub and water."

Hi Harbor Guy,

Thanks for the continuing info on NYC's harbors. Keep up the good work (longing to see the ocean, again).

Pam: Thanks for your compliment; I'll post when events are of interest. Have you heard if the coal trains are regularly running along the Monongahela stretch?

Dave: QSL, 73.

FWIW, everything still looks normal in Seattle. No unusual piles of containers, no excess ships tied up in the bay. Haven't seen the cranes moving, but that's because I've been too busy to watch, not an indication that they are NOT moving.
