I have couple of questions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

First..what is a polly?

Second... I just stumbled on this room this evening and have read some of the posts and am fascinated that people really devote this much time to conspiring/obsessing over the 'Y2K' problem. My questions is what is the point of this board? What do you hope to accomplish by rambling on about every minute glitch that happens during the course of the day?(glitches happen every day of the year I might add).

The government has never lost checks before? Air travel has never been delayed for 2 hours coming out of NY/Boston? Power outages don't occur every day at various places throughout the world/nation? Never heard of system errors, system crashes before Y2K? hmmmm

It seems to me that a lot of people are jumping at every shadow that moves and see ghosts and goblins around every corner waiting to lurch out and strike them dead.

And I do believe a lot of hysterical people are hoping for at least one major disaster so they can declare: "I told you so. All those years of obsessing over this problem and the time and money I spent have not been been in vain !!!"

This is a case of people scaring themselves rather than being scared by any 'Y2K' glitch.

Why not just frighten yourself and work yourself into a hysteria over the possibility that someday you might get hit by lighting while trying to run from that meteor thats falling on you while you walk to the Powerball Lottery comission to pick up your winnings.

Hey, don't laugh. It might happen you know !

Joe: you just arrived? Welcome. Some of us have been hanging out in the forum precincts for many, many months. Many have gotten to know each other well on TB2000, on the Prep forum, and in chat. Ideas have been shared, arguments raised and settled, provocative issues set forth. I, for one, have learned a very great deal here from some very wise folks (and I say that as someone who holds a Ph.D, so I'm not entirely w/out discernment).

If you're genuinely interested in the development of the forum and its content, I suggest you spend some hours cruising the archives, listed at the bottom of the new threads page.

I also recommend that you exercise a little bit of respect when posting; then you'll draw others' interest, you'll learn something, and won't look idiotic. Your present question isn't going to produce much feedback from regular or long-time posters, I'm afraid. 'Polly' is short for 'pollyanna'. Bet you can figure it out from there.
