ACCC asked to probe handling of Y2K bug

Saturday 8 January, 2000 The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is being asked to investigate the computer industry over its handling of the Y2K bug.

Queensland Labor Party backbencher Neil Roberts wants the ACCC to investigate whether there has been collusion in the industry to use the problem to reap profits.

About $12 billion has been spent rectifying the problem in Australia.

Mr Roberts has questioned the need for that expenditure saying the industry was aware it was an issue in 1981.

"Consumers, governments, companies all over the world have been duped by the industry, yes that's right," he said.

"Everyone I feel has been forced in a sense to pay enormous costs to fix up a problem the industry knew existed and could've done something about many, many years ago."
