BANGKOK, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Thai Oil confimed on Friday it planned to resume operations at its fire-damaged refinery at Sri Racha southeast of Bangkok on January 17.

"We are ready to run operations even now," managing director Chulchit Bunyaketu told Reuters.

"The Industry Ministry had inspected the whole operations of Thai Oil, both affected and unaffected by the fire, and verbally allowed us to restart. An official letter is expected today," Chulchit said.

His comments followed a report in the Bangkok Post newspaper on Friday saying Thai Oil might not be ready to reopen the refinery as previously planned on January 17.

A major fire broke out at Thai Oil's refinery in early December. An explosion and 35-hour blaze destroyed four storage tanks containing about 40 million litres of gasoline and killed seven workers.

Thai Oil is 49 percent owned by the Petroleum Authority of Thailand. Thailand's Chowkwanyun family owns 26 percent, the Royal Dutch/Shell group 15 percent and Caltex 4.75 percent.
