REAL Sign of the times... ABC News does special about Mass Hysteria

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just FYI, from one person's perspective.

ABC news does special, on January 16, 2000, at 6:30pm about the effects of Mass Hysteria, and the after shocks from fear, uncertainty and doubt. You might want to check into it.

Quote: "A Teacher says she smells gasoline. A few minutes later students also claim to smell gasoline as well. Firefighterts show up after an emergency 911 call to the school. Conclusion... panic and confusion spread by one woman's iraational fear of fuel and absolutely no cause for alarm".

Other documented FUD 911 calls discussed and pyschologts analyse the effects of fear and mass hysteria on the public after the world trade center bombing and the gas attack on Japan's subway station.

Take it or leave it... but anyone who thinks Y2K is going to be a "big deal" is suffering from mass hysteria.

Have a nice night, don't let the Y2Kritters bite...

Next person to smell gas, don't sweat it. All in your head. Calm down and have a cigarette.

JIT, LOL. This mass hysteria stuff is like the last nail in the polly coffin. Not referring to folks here who sincerely sought information, but to persons looking for reasons to justify laziness or inaction...persons who dismiss any potential threat rather than making an informed decision, one way or the other.

Thanks for the post, very insightful!

For the record..I've never bitten anyone who didn't deserve it. ;-)

I agree Mass Hysteria is an unfair characterization.

We can disagree on whether or not to characterize Y2K as potential doom, but for those who decided it was, preparation was appropriate. Everyone's point at which they want to buy insurance is different. BTW; I live in Chicago, and I have earthquake/volcano insurance ($90/yr here). I suffer ridicule for this, but when that ol' Madras fault goes, I'll have a shot at collecting.

Too much data was out there from reputable sources to be saying now that it was our mass hysteria. I'd do it again in the same situation.

Like what Mara said. As an aside I was mugged recently and off work for 8-9 days... Didn't have to leave the apartment at all, had everything I needed except beer :o) Now, I wouldn't have it any other way...

Mass hysteria (fear of not making money)is keeping the stock market up and mass hysteria (fear of losing money) will bring it down.
