Client's UM Policy Expired, Integon Sent Offer To Renew, But Refused Payment After Accident. Any advice?

Has anyone persuaded UM carrier to pay in this situation?

Client's Integon policy expired, but Integon sent an "Offer to Renew" with a "Due Date" of 12/31/99. Client was injured and then tried to pay premium before the "due date" but Integon refused citing the accident as grounds for refusal.

Also, note that the letter containing the "Offer to Renew" did state that Integon would not renew if client had an accident between the expiration date and the date of premium payment. Unfortunately, client had focused on the words "due date" and assumed that he was OK as long as he paid his premium by the due date.

Please let me know if you've dealt with a similar situation.
