greenspun.com : LUSENET : Walsh Intro to Philosophy : One Thread

The role and purpose of philosophy is to discover truths through the use of reason ("What is Philosophy" L. Bove, P.H.D.). These truths include, but aren't limited to; discovering the meaning of human life, discovering reality, and discovering one's destiny. Reason makes philosophy unique because reason is purely intellectual. Reason does not require any physical apparatus. One needs only a brain and the ability and desire to think in order to reason. Philosophy also uses reason to challenge commonly accepted ideas. Philosophy is an exercise for the brain. Philosophy requires conscious effort to ignore common answers and explore new solutions.
