Monday January 24 8:48 PM ET Oil Tanker Sinks Off Emirates Coast

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - An oil tanker sank Monday off the eastern coast of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, spilling 980 tons of heavy crude oil, an official said.

The tanker, Liaza, belonged to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and was carrying the company's crude to local refineries when it sank 4 miles off the coast, said the official. The tanker sank in bad weather, leaving an oil spill 1,980 feet by 330 feet.

Bad weather hampered operations to salvage the ship and to control the oil spill.

No other details were available.

This is really getting ridiculous. I realize that every spill is not Y2K, but come on, how many more oil spills can this planet recover from?

Does anyone here have a link or at least a total of the recent spills and where / when they occured?

Why don't the papers put oil spills and refinery explosions on the front page anymore? Remember the Alaskan spill? It was everywhere.. just like O.J.

What the heck is going on?

May the God, in Heaven, show us some compassion. I remember, the Script that Says "God, is no respector of Persons". The oil problems, continue, to threaten the fish from the sea, the crops from the field. Pray to your God, to deliver us, from this test. I read somewhere, that God brings these things upon us, so we might be drawn closer to him, through our human life tragedy. Hell's Bells, I didn't write it, I just read it. Take a slow look, on everything that is happening, mostly the weather. God allowed the electrity to flow, into 2000 (Man, those angels must have pulled their ham strings to keep this "Mother" going. PRAISE BE! to a GOD!!!!

i dont have a link but i remember seeing headlines of a huge oil spill in south america i think, does anybody know. i told my friends who i told to prepare for y2k, that the biggest problem with y2k would be oil then chemical. i knew data systems where safer because they can always be batched and corrected even if it took another special program to fix it, the most important thing is to be aware of errors so the can be corrected. but in production systems glitches cause shut downs, these are happening across the board, these systems in factories in most cases have been fairly easily corrected or are able to be worked around. but refineries and chemical production plants have many long drawn out processes if any thing goes wrong y2k related or not, it can take weeks if not months to get systems up and running to be able to reach full production. so that means even though the glitches are found, the system shuts down, it has to go through the long progress of startup, then a new problem (not detected because the system was down) could cause even more falures. more time in start up mode. now there are refinaries and chemical production plants all over the world. they can absorb some disruptions, how much, i have no idea, hope someone does. if oil problems continue on the present track, we still could be on the way to a "4" or "5" . but if the chemical indrustry goes down the same road (i think it has at least a moderate chance) then we could be in for a "8" or "9" since almost all manafacturing needs chemicals to complete there processes. if shortages of the chemicals cause delays and problems in production on top of inflated and short oil supplys in all manafacturing (or at least a good portion),then this could be at the begining of the "domino theory", that could lead to an "8" or worse. so keep watching and hope that im wrong(i hope i am).

That was the Rio spill from a ruptured underwater pipeline as I recall; and the story is due for an evening update. Last I heard, the slick was "tar-balling" and moving rapidly in toward the pristine white beaches.

Heaven Help Us, I might consider the "non-event" instead to be a deception which will lead the goats to worship even more the mysterious self-healing technology, rather than praising God for His mercy. Just a thought.
