PUNE: Design of the new stealth frigate is complete and production is likely to start soon, according to vice admiral Madhavendra Singh, flag officer commanding-in-chief, western naval command, Indian navy. Speaking to newspersons here yesterday, vice admiral Singh said the frigate would be of top quality to match the demands of the 21st Century, reports PTI.
He said the union government has given permission to build an air defence ship as a replacement of aircraft carrier for the INS Vikrant. "We are also talking to Russia about the purchase of Russian aircraft carrier, 'Admiral Gorshkov", the vice admiral said.
In February 2001, an international fleet review would be held in Mumbai where over 70 ships, including those of foreign origin, will be displayed, he said. Vice admiral Singh also made it clear that the Indian navy is very keen to indigenise itself. "Anybody who is manufacturing products that we need, can approach us we will evaluate his proposal", he added.
"Ihe indian industry has a lot of talent but it is not coming forward to fulfill naval orders", he said adding that this could be because of the smallness in quantity of our orders. Vice admiral Singh was in the city to commission the Pune unit of the Sea Cadet Corps.
