Haven't read the book but here's three sites devoted sustainable living that might help:

Midwest Renewable Energy Association at - www.the-mrea.org The Rocky Mountain Institute - www.rmi.org Home Power Magazine -

At the MREA's annual fair, they have demos of alternative construction techniques. Haven't been to RMI, but it is on my list of must see when I get to Colorado - the had a program on public radio. As I recall, they have buildings (in the mountians of Colorado) that virtually don't need to be heated... And home power, though focused on power issues has all sorts of interesting links.

Just one work of caution. I had heard that 'envelop' homes, (though an interesting design concept) can be a real problem when it come to fire. The same convection envelop that provides a blanket of warmth provides a fan for fire - resulting in rapid spread and greater destruction. So if you're considering that concept, you may want to discuss risks with your fire officials.

Good Luck jh

Haven't read it. Is the "solar slab" something other than a slab used for thermal mass?
