Poe's Writings

I am fairly familiar with Poe's writings, I have read them since I was younger. But I've only read spooky stories of his, and I was just wondering if he had very many other books that didn't follow his routine of short and scary? And if he has had other books, what are they like? Can you actually take him seriously in them?

I haven't read any other POe stuff, but I can't imagine it being very easy to take him seriously if you read the weird stuff first. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that no matter how open minded youare, you really won't be able to get past the initial oddities in his work.

I believe that Poe purposely writes his short stories with that touch of gothic appeal, because that is his trademark among his writings. I to have read many of Poe's short stories and I enjoy the mystery and creepy situations he write's about, if he didn't use that certain touch than his stories wouldn't hold the famous gothic appeal that he became well known for.
