Value of whaling "ditty box"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Exchange: A Forum for Antiques and The Arts : One Thread

I inherited a small wooden box (approximately 6" high by 8" deep by 12" long) with inlay of mother of pearl, whale bone, and wood on the top, front and both sides. Top hinged and lifts open. Interior is finished with dark blue felt material. Small compartments within right interior.

Story goes that it belonged to my great great great uncle, who was a sailor on a whaleship. Family is from Boston and later, New London CT., area.

I have sent to New Bedford Museum for names of persons who might be able to appraise, but am looking for any other insights I might be able to get on value, rarity, etc. No interest in parting with the box, just curious.

Thanks!
