gas prices on Maui

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

What will the ceiling be on gas prices? Here on Maui, the price for regular unleaded has just gone up another 2cents a gallon on all grades. Regular unleaded is $1.74 a gallon, mid grade is 1.84 a gallon, and unleaded premium is 1.94 a gallon. I am sure we will be the first state to top the $2.00 dollar a gallon for gas. On CNN i heard it reported that we are not as dependent on oil as we use to be. Tell that to the people that have bought gas guzzler's when gas was cheap and now regret not considering fuel cost increases.I sure am glad that i bought a four cylinder automobile.

Hey, Kate!

I also purchased another 4 cyl. car. I looked at a truck, but I opted for another Honda Civic just like the one I had, but with a roof rack. Older model(1990), but I can keep it going, and it was in good shape. Gets 40mpg. WooHoo!

Combine that with 200 gallons of gas I stored last year when it was $.77 a gallon, a bus pass that gets me to and from my house to my job for ten bucks a month, and lotsa spare parts(plastics, anyone? Petroleum products there, too) and fuel additives/cases of oil, and I think I'll be set for a while. With my vehicle use, I can get about a year off of my gasoline reserves from where I am(at 20 miles of driving a day; rarely would I even do this in a month, but I'm trying to be conservative), should I have to use them.

Good luck to all!

Wow!

Just think how high gas would get if inflation weren't dead. :)

Kate, I talked with man who worked for Texaco for 17 years (now lives on the Big Island). I asked him if there was any reason for gas to be so expensive here in Hawaii. He said "not one" and went on to explain that Hawaii has two refineries in Honolulu. By rights it should be cheaper than California since our crude comes from Singapore- same as CA. He's written letter after letter to newspaper editors but no one wants to listen. He also said there was no reason for the Neighbor Islands to be so much higher either. He said the gas business- from the refineries on down to the gas stations make record profits here in Hawaii and gas distributors on the Mainland would cut off their right arms to have this type of margin. I think of this every time I fill up.

Kate:

Try the gas prices on Molokai. Last time I was there (November), they had dropped to a mere $1.89...

Prices are indeed going up on Kaua'i, as well...about 2 cents a bump. I suspect that the prices have been relatively stable due to the ongoing lawsuit for price fixing/gouging that the state has against some of the suppliers...

Looking at the positive side, perhaps that SUV with the big engine that I want will be a bit less money in the near future (demand will be down!)...
