Interesting.

Was a United Airlines flight carrying 180 people. Requested emergency landing, as the plane was unable to make a right turn while attempting to land at the Des Moines Airport. No indication as to what was wrong with he plane. Plane was attempting to land around 6:PM CST. Update just carried on CNN local news segment. No injuries reported, guess it landed OK.

this is unreal. and way too coincidental for it not to be Y2K. so why would it have taken this long, if it was Y2K, for these problems to show?

Let me guess - this was a "right" jackscrew problem.

Because, until now, the problems have been able to be covered up.

Monday February 14, 2000 Alert II Causes Scare at Airport

Some tense moments Sunday night at the Des Moines Airport. That's because a 727 travelling from Denver to Des Moines was in danger of making an emergency landing, or worse. Fire and rescue crews from all over the metro area were speeding toward the aiport in case the worst happened. Luckily, the plane landed safely. There were 140 passengers on board at the time. They say they knew there was a problem but no one thought it was very serious. People working at the airport say the United plane was unable to make right turns.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 13th

Airplane Scare: Passengers on United Flight 1190 from Denver to Des Moines had a bit of a scare tonight when their plane landed. Recent MD-80 stabilizer problems have the FAA ordering inspections of those planes, but the aircraft that made an emergency landing in Des Moines tonight was not an MD-80 type plane, it was a 727. That airplane is not among those covered by the inspection order. We first heard there might be problems with United Flight 1190 around 6:00 this evening. Des Moines Fire and Rescue Squads were sent to the airport to stand- by. According to the pilot, the plane, carrying around 140 people, was having steering problems. The pilot radioed the control tower when the plan was about 12 miles from the Des Moines airport. There is no indication that this mechanical problem has anything to do with the rear stabilizer or jackscrew. The plane landed safely at the airport, but passengers told New 5 that the last minutes of the flight were a little somber. United Airlines would not comment on what the problems were for Flight 1190 and passengers we talked with were just happy their plane landed safely.

I was on the plane and it was clear from the voice of the co-pilot that he had concerns that he was covering up. I looked out on the wing as they tested all the flaps and controls. I know that there were steep turns to the left and only smaller ones to the right. For a short period of time I was tense, but went back to reading my book on the Huns to finish up the trip landing with fire engines flashing lights. They did not have us duck and cover so I don't thing it was that big of deal.
