Cargo Plane Crashes in Rancho Cordova

An Emery Air Freight DC-8 crashed near Mather Air Field shortly before 8:00 pm this evening. According to early reports, the aircraft was departing from the runway, experienced problems, and crashed while attempting to return to the field. The jet fell into an auto auction lot on the eastern side of the former Air Force base, igniting several small buildings and dozens of automobiles. Firefighters battled the flames for more than 90 minutes before extinguishing the blaze. There is no word on the fate of the three members of the aircrew. A huge column of smoke that was visible to residents of Rancho Cordova and the eastern areas of Sacramento is now dispersing.
