Heard it on CNN--I think 80 flights cancelled yesterday. Anyone know about this? Also, a cargo plane in Australia bellylanded.

More Than 100 America West Flights Canceled Following Computer Glitch The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) - America West Airlines was forced to cancel more than 100 flights nationwide after a computer system that prepares flight plans for pilots and crews quit working.

Several thousand passengers were affected by delays or cancellations nationwide and about 1,000 passengers were forced to camp out at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport Thursday night. In addition, some 1,500 hotel rooms were given away in Phoenix, said airline spokeswoman Patty Nowack.

Many were beginning to board their flights this morning.

"It was hellish. It was just row after row filled with people and everyone was just disgusted," said Ernesto Martinez of El Paso, Texas, who spent the night at the airport.

Nowack said 88 flights were canceled Thursday and another 40 today, although the computer problem was fixed by Thursday evening. Some of the cancellations were related to weather problems on the East Coast.

The airline was still experiencing delays averaging one or two hours today, she said.

The computer that malfunctioned normally provides information including weather, statistics on the plane and instructions for the flight crew.

Many flights canceled in Detroit, Chicago and elsewhere in the midwest due to a y2k induced blizzard.
