Why did Lucy ask to not be knocked out? Is that normal?

I figure that it was so that we can observe Kelly Martin's wonderful acting for just a bit longer before she passed on. It wouldn't have been really cool if she was just lying there the whole time and we wouldn't have gotten that very last sarcastic look in her eyes before she crashed, but I'm probably way off....

I thought that was weird too. I have three vastly contrasting thoughts on what may have motivated that decision. (1) That she had total faith that she was going to live through this, and, being a healer to the core, wanted to learn as much as she could, and being as empathic as she was, wanted to experience and be alert to all of the nightmares to which her future patients would be forced to endure or (2) she had been aware of Carter's stabbing as well, and perhaps felt guilt that a patient under her care could do this to both of them... I'm not implying that the guilt is rational, but very, well, female, and sort of like Lucy, to take on the full weight of the care of any of her patients... anyway, she might have felt so distraught over the incident, and so guilty or ashamed that she somehow felt she deserved to be going through this whole ordeal... and that being conscious was just a way to punish and torture herself more. (3) One more theory... perhaps she knew the end was near, and wanted to be coherent as long as possible... to take everything in... even if she couldn't speak, she could look around her, and marvel at being in the place where so much healing and pain takes place... taking a final gander at the hosptial and staff who had become home and family to her.

I think it was because she was afraid she might never wake up once they knocked her out. She looked so scared....

I think she wanted to be aware of what was going on, given she'd been out for awhile.

Sandy has hit the nail on the head: fear of going under and never coming back. If you've ever been in a situation similar to this, albeit not quite this seriously, you'd likely feel the same. I had an allergic reaction to the iodine dye used in a CT scan, and the only thing I wanted was to fight to stay awake. I'm glad I did. I also think Lucy realized how seriously she was injured and wanted every second she could steal...Emma

I also think it was because she was scared of being asleep/unconsicious and never waking back up. She knew how serious her situation was and wanted to experience every last second of life that she possibly could.

I agree that I think one of the reasons was because she was afraid of never waking up again, but I also think that as a student she may have been interested in what was happening. Romano even told her he'd walk her through it (I think he was talking to her).
