Where to buy deerskin leather?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi Folks, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could purchase some tanned deerskin to be used in mitten-making for the palms. I know a few people around here take deer every year, but not one has ever used the leather( I guess they just throw it out!), and don't seem to know about having it tanned at all. I also knit socks, and would like to use the deerskin for soles. I am connected to a few groups who would also be interested in purchasing.....

Without going into my archives, I suggest you contact H.B.Place Co. in Hartford, Wisconsin. I am doing this from memory (about 6 or 8 years memory!) so I may be a little wrong. Seems they were, or are, at Sumner (sp?) Street. If this doesn't work, get back to me and I'll do an actual search of my paper files. There's also a place in PA that will tan hides of many types. The name "Bucksport County" comes to mind. I KNOW I have their address, but it's in the barn and I'm not. Lesley - help here? Get back to me on this one, too, although I'm not sure they do deerskins! Good Luck! Brad

If you find someone to tan the hides for you, I have been able to link up with the local meat packer to buy unclaimed deerskins for $5. The demand around here is so low, I can always get more than I could ever use.

Wow, this is ironic. People here don't want the hides, but they don't want to waste them either, so you could easily get the hides for free and tan them yourself, or at least make buckskin. There is a plywood box at the gas station where people donate hides, and it was full throughout hunting season.

I would check a butcher, because hunters only get back what they want back, and most probably don't want the hides. Also, there are places on-line, like www.braintan.com (they charge $15/sq.ft or about $150 a hide)

Good luck!

Sandie, a company called Leather Unlimited Corporation used to carry tanned deerskins. I haven't gotten a new catalog in a while, but I would contact them. If they don't have them, they can probably tell you where to get them. Their address is Leather Unlimited, 7155 Highway B, Belguim, WI 53004-9990. Phone number 920-994-9464.
