Will Doe go into second breeding cycle if not bred like deer?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Ihave been very busy this year and have not taken my does to be bred yet it's almost March. Will they continue to come in to esturus if not bred or did I miss the boat? Also I heard I can force them in to esturus with a hormone? Anyone had this problem? Or has anyone ever used this hormone and where do you purchase it. THANKS!!!!!

our nigerian doe comes into heat every three weeks [ we live in town so makes interesting 2 days until she is quit again] if you live near california you can probably hear her.I think most will breed almost year round but you dont want a pregnant doe in extremly hot weather.

Hi Russ,

does usually go into heat if not bred in a 21-28 day cycle. if you'd like to bred her you can try lutolayse to bring about heat. You give the shot (forgot how many cc's) and then wait I believe its 48 hrs, don't have goat info handy. You can also try getting the smell of the buck in a rag and then tie to fence, that also can bring about heet. I have alos heard about light therapy from commercial gat daries, its based upon artifical light to bring about the heet cycle. Hope this helps.

Russ, most does will cycle in March given a mature enough buck. Especially if she is not Nubain, our LaMancha's cycle in March even after kidding in December. You could try Lutilyze, we give 2cc in a deep muscle shot and if the doe still has some lutinizing hormone left in her she will cycle (here in 36 hours) this will also cause her to abort, so make sure you know she is open. Here in South Texas the thought of August kids makes me cringe (flies, coccidia, heat stress) I prefer winter kids. Vicki McGaugh

Russ, I too am in a predicament as far as trying to decide whether to get my Oberhasli doe bred or not. She was supposed to have been bred in November, but came back into heat. I don't have a buck so, I was caught off guard, then the next heat cycle we were snowed in!! Anyhow, things continued until I am now unsure if I just want to skip this year or go for some end of July kids. This will also put some strain on this doe for next fall's breeding and I'd probably have to put off breeding her again until later in November to let her recover some...I'm leaning more toward skipping for all the other reasons mentioned...I'm also getting my own buck!!! Just have to watch out that the doe doesn't get too fat (outside and inside) while taking her vacation this year.
