What makes you like artwork? What kinds of art do you like the most, and why?

I'm no artist but I like to look at art. Just this past weekend some friends and I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

I tend to prefer art that looks like something. You know, landscapes, people, etc. The ones I shy away from are plain portraits of people or anything too religious and weird. Think halos over peoples heads!

I also like some of the abstract art if it looks like the artist was trying to DO something, not just thow paint on the canvsas. I mean, I can paint stripes straight across canvas in one color too. That stuff just doesn't mean anything to me.

One of my favorite artists is Monet.

I think it really depends on what you're familiar or knowledgeable with. Like with lit, for me, I've become generally familiar with a plenitude of genres and types of lit, all forms of poetry, and so for me when i start to look at all of them within their context it's hard for me to prefer one over the other. same with art. i didn't like cubism or surrealistic art at the beginning. when i was young i thought it was weird, and actually, metling watches would surface in my dreams and scare the oodles out of me. but as i've learned slowly about the history involved, the participants involved and what movements they were a part of, i've been able to embrace more fringe elements of art. as for abstract, i'm still very unfamiliar with it. so when i go to a gallery i look at it, and just see a canvas with stuff on it, and i know that i lack that contextuality which would give me greater satisfaction. so it's only a matter of time, i guess, and me getting off of my lazy butt and learning about abstract art that will allow me to like it as well. i'll always have certain favorites, but you really can't discredit something, unless you don't know it.

my favorite artists are edward hopper and goya.
