The New York Times (I think) reported the Democratic Chairman in South Carolina laughed so hard when he heard Bush's attack ads, he had to pull his car over.

It is a problem with a two party system, where both parties have to appeal to their extremes to win an election, and then appeal to the center to get elected. Every election cycle, the out party laughs at the struggles of the in party to hold its coalition together.
