universal precautions and the bloody glove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

I'm wondering if the medical types here would like to comment on Luka's and Cleo's inability to remove blood-stained gloves before leaving the ER. Nevermind about Jerry's lack of handwashing habits, I think the CDC should visit CCH ASAP! (CDC = Centers for Disease Control, the government agency responsible for tracking sources of infectious disease, plus other causes of mortality and morbidity)

How funny you bring that up. I'm not a medical type, but I noticed that, too. I was thinking, "Hey, don't touch the elevator with those bloody gloves!" Isn't that a health hazzard? Also, she touched Luka on the arm and even though he had a dark shirt on I thought, "Hey, blood stains are hard to get out. Don't go messing up his shirt." LOL!

I was thinking the same thing last night! Even Luka or Cleo touched the little girl's mother too. Ew.

Not to mention the long-ago episode when Doug and Mark were in the men's room ... and Mark barely rinsed his hands after going to the bathroom! YUCK!!!

Lily- I thought the exact same thing! Plus, in last week's 'All in the family', when Kerry is done throwing up, she wipes her mough with a bloody glove!! They really need saniation lessons!

it is so funny that you all would mention this! i have worked in a hospital for 9 years, and i am always catching them on this show, doing these kinds of things!! i keep my eyes peeled for it actually. at the facilities that i have worked, you can be fired on the spot for getting caught not washing your hands according to the regulations, and for wearing gloves out of the patients room ,bloody or not, they are still considered contaminated if you put them on in the room, even if you didnt touch anything!!

when i made my post, i hadnt seen the show yet, i taped it. now that i have seen it, i saw 2 things inthe first 5 minutes of the show. 1: abby worked on the foreign body up the nose guy, then turned around and took off her gloves, and satarted on the hemmorhoid patient WITHOUT washing her hands, a big NO-NO!!2: she drew the hemmorhoid guy's blood, then waled out in the hallway with an UNCAPPED needle full of blood!! BIGGIE! after that i quit counting cuz i just wanted to enjoy the show!!

Ridiculous? How about the time they needed O neg and had Carter sit on a stool in the ER without screening him as a donor at all and began to draw off a unit of blood. PLEASE! CMV/ HIV? HepA/B?
