Dr. Dave not at memorial?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

ok, here's my question. In an earlier scene Jing-mei tells Carter that the memorial service was nice. Then later Dr. Dave talks to Lucy's mother, but doesn't relize that it's her mother until after she says so. Does this mean he wasn't at the memorial? Wouldn't he have reconized her from there?

Maybe it is because Lucy is not from Chicago, and her mom had to fly up their just to get her stuff...

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. I think the memorial was a private thing for hospital staff and such. Who knows for sure though.

Perhaps, he couldnt get the time off because SOMEONE had to cover the ER and they are already short 1 doc...

There's always functions that not everyone is able to attend. Dr. Benton and Dr. Ross (for obvious reasons) didn't attend Nurse Hathaway's pseudo wedding. In season 1 there was a 4th of July softball game that Dr. Carter didn't get to attend because he had to work. A hospital never closes and unfortuantely there is always someone who's gonna have to work.

Not to be nit picking - but Ross was at Carol's wedding - he sat behind her in the church while she cried and she confessed to him just how boring Tag really was...

I THOUGHT THAT, TOO! I was thinking Dr. Dave should have recognized her ... but then I thought I was thinking too much into it. If Dr. Dave went to the memorial, he would likely NOT have sat in the front (where her mom would be) and, not to be too stereotypical, probably not have looked too closely at Lucy's Mom. It is possible he did go, but either never really saw her or simply didn't recognize her.

I doubt she went to the memorial. Like someone else pointed out, they are usually for the benefit of the people who work with the deceased. Also, if she had been at the hospital earlier for the memorial, why wouldn't she have gotten Lucy's things then? (I realize she could have just been coming from the service, but everyone else seemed to have been back at work for quite a while.)

It makes sense that it took Lucy's mom a little while to get over to the hospital. When organizing a funeral service, there's a lot to attend to. If you pretend for a second that it's real and not make believe, you'll realize that she could have been off working on life insurance issues, talking to her landloard about closing the lease, or any multitude of things. There's more to life than where one works.

As for some folks not attending the memorial, as someone said, SOMEBODY has to run the hospital. In the years that I worked in an ER, the tradition was that the folks that knew the subject (in this case Lucy) least covered the ER while those closest to the person went to the event, be it a wedding, funeral, whatever.

Wouldn't the memorial be AT the hospital? This isn't the funeral we're talking about here. That would be held back at Lucy's home. Actually, the time element is exactly why I don't think she would have gone to a memorial. She's got a lot to take care of, and I'm sure she just wants to get her daughter and go home.
