Laura...its been many years since I shopped for a separater. But your choice is tin or stainless steel. The latter being about double the price. There are used ones around and the best place to find them is in the publications re country and or goats. I have a beauty that is all royal blue cast iron with brass gears. The disks are tin and all in good shape. Strangley, the disks on this unit don't have to go into spesific order. The bowl is one gallon, which was super for our needs. This unit is old and its from Sweden. There are lots of dairy goat owners that have seperators. Lots of people had small goat dairies in the 70s. The goats are gone but the seperators are collecting dust. You might have to have them retinned. I no longer have the info but if you can get into the archives of Countryside Journal they have the address of where to have it done. MAKE SURE if you buy a used one, that the order of disks is intact. In otherwords, try it out first. You can go nuts trying to establish the order of disks if its wrong. There should be a "thangie" that looks like a very large safety pin that holds all the disks in their proper order. Make sure you get the alan(sp) wrench that goes with the machine. If there is no wrench, establish whether its metric or US and also establish that the insertion point for wrench isn't stripped. You MUST be able to adjust the machine for the type of milk going through. I have a friend in Idaho with a unit and I will email her and see if she wants to sell it. Taz

dear taz, thankyou so much for responding. you have answered many questions for me with your posts on both forums, whether you realised it or not. i have found acream separator shown in the hoegger supply company that looks pretty good. i think. they advertise all parts to be dishwasher safe. the discs are stainless, the milk receiver bowl and the spouts are " high quality food grade plastic". the base is enameled cast iron. their price is 235.00. and a replacement part kit of extra discs, o-rings, washers, gears and other necessary parts is 15.00. what do you think? laura

This thread on the Countryside forum talks about Separators and re-tinning

Laura...I would investigate the PalavaII, but the rest of those listed above are useless to you. They are big honkers that need to be bolted to a cement floor. If you are not milking more than 12 goats at a time, you DON'T NEED/WANT anything but a table top. Those big ones are but a large pain in the butt. Call up these people and see what they have. They have been in business for years ane are recognized among the serious goat breeders as being the experts. They will tell you what they think is best and probably have a couple of separaters to choose from. I think I would buy from them. I am leary of anything re plastic around milk, food grade or not. You can buy stainless steel milk bucket, brushes, etc from these people and their catalog is full of goat knowlege. If you are rather new to goats, I hope you have JD Balengers book, "Raising Dairy goats the Modern Way" or something like that. Goats are fun but have their problems. Let me know if I can help. I really am a goat expert and have been paid handsomely for my knowledge by the USDA. I also do some work for UN in 3rd world nations connected with goats. If I can't help you, I can probably steer you to someone that can. The biggest thing is to make sure you keep your goats parasite free and the drug of choice is probably Ivermectin. Caprine Supply catalog is an encyclopedia of goat knowledge. I envy you your goats. I want to tell you there is nothing like having your face in the warm flank of a goat while milking on a cold frosty morning. When I used to come into the kitchen with my hot bucket of goats milk and half dozen eggs, there was NO ONE IN THE WORLD RICHER THAN I!! Caprine Supply P.O.
