This may have been asked a million times before but I was just wondering if anyone knew why Sherry springfield AKA Susan left the show. She was my all time fave and I would love to know.

She, like Kellie Martin, followed a significant other to the East coast. Sherri had a boyfriend who was moving to New York (Manhattan maybe). Anyway, she followed. NBC made her sign a contract stating that she wouldn't do any television without their permission for three years (the amount of time remaining on her contract). She moved, (broke up with the guy) moved again, got married, (to a new guy) and is now able to do television without NBC's permission. I just read that she's in a movie next week.

Actually, while the press made it out to seem that Ms. Stringfield solely left for the purpose to follow a significant other, I read an interview where she clarified that, saying it was really just a small part of the reason. The production schedule for filming an hour weekly drama is exhausting, and SS, I suppose, felt that the grueling work days (at that time I believe they were up to 16 hours, and have sinced reduced to 12 or so) were taking the fun out of her job. She left and headed East, to do theater work, be with her then-boyfriend, and pursue independent film roles. I read a quote from her one time were she said that she comes from theater, and she never really wanted to be famous.

I am really not trying to be catty, but I read somewhere that this wasn't the first time that Sherry Stringfield didn't fulfill her contract for a television show. I can't remember where I read it, but just thought that I would post it. Maybe someone else knows and will post the information too... -cj

You're right...I'm pretty sure She did the same thing to NYPD Blue.

Did Sherry Stringfield not fulfill her contract to "NYPD Blue," or did she just not renew it? I never watched, but I've read that she didn't have a major role, and that by season's end she felt her character had served its purpose, or gone as far as it could go.

Sherry Stringfield was on NYPD Blue for the first season playing a DA and David Caruso's ex-wife. When Caruso left after the first season, it was sort of mutually decided between TPTB at NYPD Blue and SS that there wasn't much left for her character. That was also the time that ER was starting, so I think that also influenced SS's decision to leave NYPD Blue.

Yes, as far as I remember since SS's character on NYPD was not going anywhere, ER producers asked permission to buy-out the rest of her contract so that she could star in ER. So, it isn't really like she didn't fulfill her NYPD contract as it was essentially 'transferred'to ER!

For people who would like to know it exactly: She played Blake in the 'Guiding Light' for three years, after that she played Laura in NYPD Blue for one year and after that she joined ER. For people who are still interested in her, she played in 'Autumn in New York', 'Studio 54' etc etc Great to hear that so many people still like her!!! :)

Sherry Stringfield played David Caruso's ex-wife on NYPDBlue. He left the show after one season. Her only reason to be was to torture him. No David, no need for Sherry. It was probably by mutual agreement that she left the show when she did, fortuitively since the ER gig came up when it did. I don't think she 'broke' her contract then the way she subsequently did with ER.
