GAS LEAK - From Bangkok Post - March 9, 2000

PLASTICS PLANT WORKER DIES FROM EXPOSURE TO TOXIN

Two more in critical condition in hospital

A poison gas leak victim died early yesterday in intensive care at Bamrungrad hospital in Rayong.

Pongpitak Neeranet, 26, was among workers of Thai Polycarbonate Co's plant in Map Ta Phut industrial estate whose living quarters are 100m from where the carbonyl chloride leak occurred on Monday.

He had been exposed to more than 150 parts per million of the gas, health officials said. Eighty-nine victims of the gas leak were admitted to five hospitals in Rayong, two in critical condition, according to a report to the permanent secretary for public health.

A mobile medical unit was yesterday sent to the industrial estate to take care of residents of Baan Sak Klang, tambon Huay Pong, Muang district.

Environmental tests by the provincial health office showed there was no carbonyl chloride remaining in the air and water within 2km of the leak source, it was reported.

A team of three epidemologists has been appointed to evaluate long term-effects on the health of local people.
