Factory explosion kills seven

DANIEL KWAN

An explosion ripped through a factory in Shanghai yesterday, killing seven people.

The blast happened just before lunch during a trial production run at an abandoned water plant in Shanghai's Baoshan District, Xinhua said. The trial run was conducted by staff of a health food company called Jinluda.

Eight others were injured. The agency said the impact was so powerful that several nearby houses collapsed.

About 200 police, firemen and soldiers were mobilised to put out the blaze and join the rescue.

Shanghai Vice-Mayor Han Zhen launched an investigation into the incident.

Xinhua did not give the identities of the victims and it was not clear what caused the explosion.

It said Jinluda signed a lease for the water plant only two days ago.
